Some sessions go exactly as planned. Others unfold into something a little more spontaneous but even better than planned. Ryan and Val’s engagement session in the North Carolina mountains was full of laughter and the kind of connection that reminds us why we love what we do.
These two drove three hours to meet us in Blowing Rock ready to explore the Blue Ridge Parkway, rain or shine. And as it turns out, we got both! Dodging pop-up storms and flashes of lightning, we chased light through the mountains and caught moments of stillness in between the chaos. In true NC fashion, the clouds opened up just in time for those cinematic, misty mountain views you can’t plan for but always hope to catch!

ToggleThunder Hill Overlook Blue Ridge Parkway Engagement
Our first stop was Thunder Hill Overlook right off the Blue Ridge Parkway outside of Boone, NC. It’s one of our favorite hidden gems! It’s a mountaintop spot that doesn’t require a hike but gives you stunning, full panoramic views. The overlook is easy to access (& family friendly), and because the terrain drops off, there’s nothing blocking the view. It’s dramatic, peaceful, and surprisingly quiet compared to more crowded lookouts.
This location was actually our backup when the forecast turned wild. We were able to safely hop in and out of the car, stay dry between shots, and still get sweeping vistas of the Blue Ridge. It’s perfect for sunrise or sunset, and the light here never disappoints.

Blue Ridge Parkway Engagement Photos at Price Lake
From there, we headed to another favorite: Price Lake. This spot is a dream for Blue Ridge Parkway engagement photos! Nestled at Milepost 297, it offers reflections of Grandfather Mountain, wildflowers in the spring, vibrant foliage in the fall, and peaceful waters year-round. It’s also the only spot on the Parkway that allows non-motorized boats, so you can canoe or paddleboard for a fun twist on your session. You don’t have to go far from the car to enjoy forested trails, serene lake views, and a chance to just be present with each other. Ryan and Val embraced it all (mud, wind, and water included).

Engagement Photography in Boone NC for Adventurous Couples
What made this session so memorable wasn’t just the locations, it was the way Ryan and Val leaned into the unexpected. They showed up with joy, trusted us fully, and never once let the weather steal the experience. They encouraged creativity, rolled with every last-minute shift, and let the day unfold naturally.

We spent time on mountaintop overlooks, walked wooded trails, and paused at the edge of the lake where the light hit just right. These weren’t just pretty backdrops—they reflected everything Ryan and Val value: nature, connection, and shared adventure.

This session felt natural because they focused on being present & their authentic selves. They spent their session time laughing, getting a little muddy, and creating something that feels like Ryan + Val. We ended the evening not just with memory cards full of beautiful mountain portraits, but with hearts full too—grabbing dinner together, laughing about the day, and talking about everything under the sun. That’s the magic for us. When the connection goes beyond the camera. When we leave knowing that come wedding day, we’re not just showing up as vendors. We’re showing up to celebrate friends.
